Clare Higgins #22- December’s Featured Skater – Dirty Jersey Roller Derby

Clare Higgins #22- December’s Featured Skater

Clare has been an invaluable member of DJRD since the beginning.
She’s always willing to share her knowledge, or lend a helping hand! Now that’s she an adult, we’re thrilled to share the track with her.
Her incredible derby skills – especially those powerhouse hits! – have made her a great addition to the team, and that’s why she’s our December featured skater!

What made you start derby?

My dad brought me to a Red Bank Roller Vixens’ practice when I was 11 and we both bought skates the next day. We then helped start New Jersey’s first junior roller derby team, we got sucked in really fast!

What was the hardest part of passing your minimum skills test?

The hardest part of passing my minimum skills test was crossovers. They took forever for me to learn.

What was your first bout like?
I don’t really remember my first bout, probably because I was so terrified! I know it was in a middle school gym but I’m pretty sure none of us knew how to actually play roller derby. Also I definitely had a ridiculous outfit on.

How long have you been playing derby?

Although it feels like forever, it’s only been 8 years!

What is your favorite part of derby?

My favorite part of derby is traveling. During my time with Gotham Juniors I got to go all over the country to places like Nebraska, Colorado, and California. It’s so much fun to experience new places with your teammates.

What is your least favorite part?

My least favorite part of derby is when people get injured. Being out on injury is so hard and you get so bored. I tore my ACL last year (surprisingly I wasn’t playing derby when it happened) and I was out for almost 4 months! It made me realize how much I love this sport.

What is your derby goal for the next year?

My derby goal for next year is to help my team succeed as a newly WFTDA-sanctioned team. For the past 4 years I played for Gotham Girls Junior Derby and got the chance to play in 3 national championship tournaments. Hopefully my previous tournament and competitive skating experience can help out my new derby fam!

What do you do for a living?

For a living I’m a full time/first year nursing student at Brookdale Community College and I also work at Lidl grocery stores part time.

How old are you?

I am 18.5! Yes, the 0.5 counts!

What are your interests outside of derby?

Outside of derby I enjoy photography, spending time with friends and family, and cooking (and then eating of course).
