Our May Featured Skater is certainly springing this Spring with the longest legs on the team.
Six Feet Thunder, or Thunder, is just about to cross her first derbyversary, and we have loved having her as a Dirty!
What made you start derby?
I’ve wanted to play derby as long as I’ve known about it, like the past 8 or 9 years, but I didn’t know of any leagues around me (and I didn’t have much time to devote to it anyway). Then last year I met Dirty Jersey at the Metuchen Street Fair. It was nearby! I had the time! It was basically love at first sight. Well, for me anyway.
What was the hardest part of passing your min skills test?
27/5 was, and continues to be, a challenge for me. I also had a ridiculously hard time standing on one foot.
What was your first bout like?
I promise to let you know after I play in my first bout.
How long have you been playing derby?
Around 8 months.
What is your favorite part about derby?
I love the group of strong, determined women that derby attracts, and I love that derby is inclusive of all ages and body types.
What is your least favorite part?
To be honest, the smell took some getting used to. But either I’ve grown to love it or I don’t notice anymore.
What is your derby goal for the next year?
Grow stronger, get lower, and learn more about strategy. And get good at plow stops.
What do you do for a living?
I co-own and operate a retail business, Marafiki Fair Trade, which sells ethically produced items from developing countries. I’m also a Reference Librarian sometimes.
How old are you?
47
What are your interests outside of derby?
Spending time with my family, crosswords, porch drinking, knitting, napping, tacos, and any occasion calling for a costume.
