Our February featured skater is so sweet, she’s Butterscream! In just one year with DJRD, she has improved tremendously as both a blocker and a jammer. We’re excited to have her on our roster this year because Butters is no treat for anyone who gets in her way!
What made you start derby?
I began roller derby on somewhat of an impulse, it always seemed like a cool sport but I never thought about pursuing it until someone forwarded me info about DJRD’s fresh meat camp on Facebook! I had never skated before but I have a very “how hard can it be?” kind of attitude so I jumped right in.
What was the hardest part of passing your minimum skills test?
Aside from just getting over my own nerves, I had (and still have) a lot of trouble doing transitions.
What was your first bout like?
I have yet to play my first real game, but my first scrimmage was kind of terrifying yet a lot of fun. I’m so excited to play in my first real bout this year!
How long have you been playing derby?
I celebrated my one year derby-versary last month! This year flew by and I can’t believe how much I’ve learned and improved.
What is your favorite part of derby?
Being on a team of rad athletes is definitely the best part of playing derby. I’ve made so many friends and learned so much from every teammate on and off the track. That and hitting people.
What is your least favorite part?
As much as I know I need them, I really despise doing endurance drills.
What is your derby goal for the next year?
My biggest goal is working on my stamina and becoming a better jammer.
What do you do for a living?
I am a chocolatier and pastry chef. You could say my job is pretty sweet 😉
How old are you?
26
What are your interests outside of derby?
I have too many interests and too little time. Some of my favorite things are park skating, pro wrestling, comic conventions and cosplaying, hiking, road trips, and baking.
