September’s skater of the month is as determined as they come! Molotov Cupcake is currently training to pass her skills test again after returning to derby like a champ! Off the track, she’s an amazing helper, and we appreciate everything she does. Oh, and the cupcakes. The cupcakes are killer!
What made you start derby?
I was looking for something to replace the women’s fitness boot camp I had recently completed. I had read about roller derby in Bust magazine, forgot about it, then took a friend’s daughter to see “Whip It.” Googled roller derby teams in my area, and that was that.
What was the hardest part of passing your min skills test?
Because I’ve been in and out of derby over the years, I’ve taken the skills test several times, passing and failing. But the hardest part is always 27/5. I hate you, 27/5.
What was your first bout like?
My first bout was terrifying, fun, and went by in the blink of an eye. I was on a B-team kind of mismatched against an A-team, and we got walloped. Still, I loved my teammates and I couldn’t believe I was out there actually playing — and I didn’t die. So that felt like a win.
How long have you been playing derby?
On and off since 2010.
What is your favorite part about derby?
Being part of a worldwide community of strong, unique women. Forcing myself to step out of my comfort zone. Feeling the love even when I don’t love myself.
What is your least favorite part?
When my body doesn’t cooperate with me.
What is your derby goal for the next year?
Kicking 27/5’s butt and helping build up DJRD to be a formidable presence in New Jersey.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a writer and editor.
How old are you?
My mom would say I’m old enough to know better, but I’m 47.
What are your interests outside of derby?
I love television, wine, pizza, pop culture, movies, reading, posting photos of my cats on Instagram, and bragging about my three beautiful nieces. Oh, and Paul Rudd. Paul, if you’re reading this, call me!
