What made you start derby?

I was in a really transitional time of my life. I started to take my life back, do the things that brought me happiness. Roller derby had always intrigued me, so one night I visited a team and that was it, I was hooked. The next day I bought all my gear and started my derby career.

What was the hardest part of passing your minimum skills test?

Ha! 27/5! I hate and I love 27/5. It’s a physical and mental test of your derby skills. Once I got my strength up and my stride and breathing down, I finally passed! … then died on the floor after trying to breathe! Ha!

What was your first bout like?

My first bout, I was terrified, but I went out there and tried to enjoy the moment I had worked really hard to get to. I felt like I was going to go out there and do my best and that was all I could control. It was awesome and inspiring and gratifying to say the least.

How long have you been playing derby?

I have been playing derby since 2015. I took a year off because of two ruptured discs in my neck (not sure if the injury was derby-related or not). I went through physical therapy and came back the next season and haven’t stopped…yet.

What is your favorite part of derby?

My favorite part of derby is the aggressive nature that comes out in all the ladies. We are all so multifaceted. One minute we are saying, “Oh, I’m sorry are you ok?” the next minute we are aggressively pushing each other off the track.

What is your least favorite part?

I have to say I love it all, other than the late practices, and drama. All of the hard work pays off into some benefit physically or mentally.

What is your derby goal for next year?

As for next year’s derby goals, I just want to get lower, stronger and faster.

What do you do for a living?

I am the marketing communications manager for a technology/software company.

How old are you?

I just turned 41!

What are your interests outside of derby?

Outside of derby I have two daughters that are my world! I try to stay grounded for them and teach them to be their own hero and take on the world in their own ways!
