What made you start derby?
I’d never seen roller derby before except on tv. A friend on my dodgeball team said his wife played and was always looking for new players. It seemed like fun getting to skate around and hit people so I went and tried it out.

What was the hardest part of passing your minimum skills test?
25/5 – I hate doing endurance. (For those who don’t know, that is 25 laps in 5 minutes or less, which has now become 27 laps!)

What was your first bout like?
My first bout was amazing! I was so scared and nervous all day. For as much as you practice with your teammates, it’s never really the same thing when you do it for real against another team. I assumed that I was going into the bout as just a blocker because I never jammed except for a few times in practice. I got there that day and saw that my name was listed as a jammer for 2 jams. A teammate had gotten hurt and was not allowed back in the game so I got the rest of her jams after that and somehow got most valuable jammer!

How long have you been playing derby?
2 years-ish

What is your favorite part about derby?
It’s just so much fun! I play a few sports and there’s nothing like roller derby. There is a lot more skill than just skating around in circles as fast as you can. There is definitely way more that goes into it than they make it look like on tv. I like the challenge, the teamwork, and the adrenaline.

What is your least favorite part?
That there aren’t more bouts to play!

What is your derby goal for the next year?
To skate faster.

What do you do for a living?
Public Safety Telecommunicator

How old are you?
35

What are interests outside of derby?
Playing other sports like flag football and dodgeball, my adorable puggles, and I volunteer as an EMT!
